What is Hands On Science?
The Hands On Science (HOS) program concept originated in Montgomery County, Maryland in 1980 by founder, Phyllis Katz and in 1981 came under the auspices of the Montgomery County Council of PTA's non profit arm, Educational Programs, Inc.
Hands On Science partners with school communities to spark children's interest in science and mathematics with playful, inquiry based science enrichment available to children from PreK through sixth grade. |
Hands On Science Provides:
... Researched based program materials including an activity guide for the class instructor and all hands-on supplies for each child enrolled.
... Training for adults to effectively use science and math materials.
... Ongoing support from HOS staff for adult leaders and parent volunteers. |
What is a Hands On Approach?
HOS believes that children, like many of us, learn best by doing. Every HOS class incorporates hands-on activities for each child. All children participate in every activity and take home their materials for display, discussion and recognition. HOS materials are selected for play value and safety. |
How are Science Processes Used?
HOS defines science in the broadest terms and believes that "science" is all around us in everything we do.
HOS programs encourage children to ask questions, conduct experiments and learn how science is involved in their daily lives. Children use scientific processes including observation, comparison, prediction and measurement in every HOS class. |
